Here is My Question:
I have just been diagnosed with RRMS. The most troublesome symptom that I struggle with is the cognitive deficits. I used to be a full functioning store manager and bread winner of my family. I am now on the verge of losing my job with no income. Is there medication or treatment to reverse or fix the forgetting, concentration, unable to make decisions? My doctor ordered Tecfidera...will that help? There are no MS specialists in Yuma. Answer: We are sorry to hear that your MS is impacting your job. There are many resources for you to turn to, so we will do our best to inform you of them in this blog so that you are able to get the best care and treatment and resources for you and your family. Here are a few blogs on cognitive dysfunction and MS that might be helpful for you to read in terms of what happens cognitively and what you can do to help manage it: BLOG 1 BLOG 2 There are two great articles in this newsletter from the Rocky Mountain MS Center that address both disability insurance/job benefits as well as cognition that you definitely will want to read: http://catalog.proemags.com/publication/b860b13c#/b860b13c/1 The Rocky Mountain MS Center also has a free consultation for people with MS nationally regarding employment/job benefits (you can call for a free consultation at (720)301-9708) The National MS Society has a chapter in Arizona (you can call them at 1-800-344-4867) that you might contact as they may have recommendations for you in terms of neurologists in your area with MS experience as well as resources regarding job related issues: National MS Arizona Chapter. There might not be any MS specialists in Yuma (you can check with the NMSS), but Dr. Revere Kinkel who blogs on this site and is a MS specialist is at the University of California San Diego MS Clinic which is only 2.5 hours from Yuma, so you can consider that as an option as well. The number for his clinic is (858) 822-5861 and here is a link to their website UCSD MS CLINIC.

Sorry to hear of your struggles with work also. Our son is in a very similar situation: manager of a store, family to support, cognitive/memory lapse, etc. It should be noted that while it seems there "are many resources" out there to help, it has been our experience that resources are inadequate when it comes to the disability MS brings. We're in San Diego. The NMSS told us that once our son's Family Medical Leave Act time was used up (3 months), so is his job protection under the law, regardless of the cause of his disability. Should you find out otherwise, please share.

I definitely will share. I have been researching all resources and the best thing I could find so far is to request reasonable accommodations through my work and possibly step down versus stepping out of the workforce. It's scary I know prayers to you and your family

Thank you. We have repeatedly asked for help with the cognitive issues (forgetting, etc.) from both our MS specialist & primary care dr. but have yet to be connected with any type of therapist or program. We fear this may be their way of telling us there is no help for this. In fact, the primary care has even said that these cognitive developments may be the "new normal." Seems such a waste for them to come to this conclusion without even trying. I hope all the best in you finding the answers you need.

That sounds very similar to my situation. Except my boss kept harassing me in the hospital during my last flare and once upon returning to work he wrote me up for something that didnt happen, didn't let me get a copy, nor allow me to sign the acknowledgement of receipt line, he signed it for me because in his words "I wrote it, therefore I intended to give it, therefore it will be given, so your signature of receipt isn't needed." Of course he entire ime he kept staying out of view of the security camera and kept scratching at his crotch as if he wanted me to filate him. I didnt, he left, then had HR call me the next day to send me home. He's even scared my staff into not talking to me. As well as found a way ro steal almost 200 hours of PTO from me Comments are closed.
