Are Plegridy and Rebif similar? I was told by my neurologist that they are.
The generic name of Rebif is Interferon Beta 1a. This is a recombinant protein identical to human Interferon Beta 1a, Plegridy is the same protein, Interferon Beta 1a, with a polyethylene glycol side chain attached. This alters the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of the protein to allow for a longer sustained duration of effect with fewer injections (every 2 weeks instead of every 2 to 3 days). This process of pegylation does not alter the safety profile or the efficacy the drug . Pegylation actually decreases the immunogenicity or the tendency of your own immune system to create antibodies that block the ability of interferon to bind to the interferon receptor and carry out its intended actions to treat your MS.
