Here is My Question:
I have RRMS and was diagnosed over 20 yrs ago. I have been very fortunate with the progression of my disease. I recently had a flare up that was treated with IV steroids. Is it possible that an allergy to pine, which resulted in a skin rash and swollen watery eyes, would trigger an MS episode? Thank you.
The verdict is still out on any potential link between allergic reactions and MS exacerbations. Older literature and case reports suggested a possible increased risk of relapses in the 3 months after an allergic reaction but this has never been confirmed. There is a report of two MS patients experiencing relapses occurring a week or more after an allergic reaction to fresh frozen plasma, but the link is tenuous at best. In my own experience I can not recall any relapses occurring in my patients after allergic reactions to various prescribed drugs; at least none that couldn’t be explained by other mechanisms. Most allergic reactions are Type I hypersensitivity responses mediated by IgE bound to mast cells, neither of which are known to play a significant role in activating immune responses in MS.
